Headaches

Headaches are one of the most common reasons patients are referred for physical therapy. Where a headache is coming from the neck, the jaw or the muscles around them, an examination can identify it, and hands-on treatment can address it. We assess the neck, jaw and upper back together and treat what the examination finds.

Not every headache is a physical therapy problem, and the examination is what tells us whether yours is. Headaches that follow neck pain, jaw problems, an injury or long hours in one posture are the ones most likely to respond to hands-on treatment.

Where the examination points somewhere else, we will say so and help you get to the right clinician. If you have questions about headache treatment, call the office at (718) 714-6995.

How This Works

What headaches treatment involves

Headaches that come from the neck, the jaw or the muscles around them can be identified on examination, and that is what the first appointment is for.

Where the examination points to a structure we can treat, treatment is hands-on and matched to the findings. Where it points somewhere else, we will say so and help you get to the right clinician.

What to Expect

Your visits, step by step

An examination first

The neck, jaw and upper back are assessed together to establish whether your headaches have a musculoskeletal source.

A clear answer either way

If physical therapy is not the right route for your headaches, you will be told that rather than started on a plan.

Hands-on treatment

Where treatment is appropriate, it addresses what the examination found, alongside postural and movement work.

Reviewed as you go

The plan is reviewed against how your headaches respond over the course of treatment.

Benefits

What headaches treatment is used for

  • An examination that establishes whether your headaches have a source we can treat.
  • Hands-on treatment of the neck, jaw and upper back where the findings support it.
  • A referral onward when the examination points somewhere else.

Results of an injury vary from person to person. What is appropriate for you is decided at your evaluation — call (718) 714-6995 and we can talk it through.

Common Questions

Headaches FAQs

Can physical therapy help every kind of headache?

No. Headaches have many causes, and only some of them are musculoskeletal. The examination is what establishes whether yours is one physical therapy can address.

Which headaches respond best?

Those that follow neck pain, jaw problems, an injury, or long hours held in one posture are the ones most often found to have a source we can treat.

What happens if it is not coming from my neck?

We will tell you what the examination found and help you get to the right clinician rather than continuing with treatment that does not fit the problem.

Is this right for me?

Your therapist will tell you at your evaluation. If you have questions beforehand, call the office on (718) 714-6995 and we will go through it with you.
