Back Pain

What is back pain?

Back pain or discomfort can occur in your upper,  middle, or lower back. It might result from an injury or disease and can linger long term or come and go. If you have back pain, you might experience:

  • Stabbing pain
  • Shooting pain
  • Radiating pain
  • Dull, aching pain
  • Sharp or severe pain
  • Muscle aches
  • Pain that worsens with movement
  • Numbness
  • Tingling

See the Feel Good Physical Therapy team for an evaluation if back pain doesn’t subside on its own or is severe.

What causes back pain?

You might experience back pain after an injury, such as a muscle strain, ligament strain, or ruptured disc. Pain may also appear because of poor posture, arthritis, skeletal problems, or osteoporosis. Back pain risk factors include smoking, carrying excess weight, improper lifting techniques, older age, and lack of exercise.

How does my provider diagnose back pain?

To find the root cause of middle to upper back pain, Dr. Trakhtenberg and his team review your symptoms, discuss your medical history, and examine your back and spine. They might recommend blood tests, nerve studies, bone scans, X-rays, MRIs, or other imaging procedures to make a diagnosis.

What are my back pain treatment options?

Depending on the type of disease or injury you have, your provider might recommend one or more of the following back pain treatment options:

Spinal manipulation

During spinal manipulation, your provider uses manual manipulation techniques to realign your spine and relieve back discomfort.

Massage therapy

Massage therapy and osteopathic manipulation use manual movements and pressure to manipulate musculoskeletal tissue, stimulate healing, and relieve discomfort.

Physical therapy

Your physical therapist helps you complete exercises and stretches that increase strength, optimize healing, and reduce back pain.

At-home treatments

Icing your back, resting, and wearing a back brace are at-home solutions that can relieve upper,  middle, and lower back discomfort.

Ultrasound and laser therapy

Dr. Trakhtenberg offers noninvasive ultrasound and laser treatments to stimulate your body’s natural ability to heal and regenerate new tissues.

Acupuncture cupping

During acupuncture cupping, your provider applies special cups to your skin to create suction, relieve pain, increase blood flow, reduce inflammation, and accelerate healing.
